Whether they’re wary of the risks or simply seeking insight into law firm operations, most general counsel now expect their outside firms to be transparent about their use of artificial intelligence, according to a new report.
The “2026 KPMG Global General Counsel Outlook“ notes that 82% of general counsel agree or strongly agree that they expect their firms to track and share their use of AI in client matters — a “key indicator of AI caution.”
“Law firms are now evaluated not only on legal expertise, but also on how effectively they deploy, govern, and explain the technologies supporting their work,” the report says.
The KPMG report draws on a global survey of 468 GCs and senior legal leaders in late 2025 and early 2026.
