If you use Google regularly (yes, 90% of those searching for an answer still use Google!), you are probably familiar with featured snippets. These short excerpts from linked websites have become the ultimate golden ring in search engine marketing because not only are they featured prominently, but also the way they are framed and presented is ideally suited to create a strong impression of the source website’s value for the search engine user’s query. Understandably, therefore, many attorneys have made it a priority to gain visibility by showing up in the featured snippets position. Understanding how Google selects pages and content for these featured snippets is the first step toward making sure your law firm appears in the top spot with greater frequency.
First, Let’s Address The Elephant In The Room
We all know that featured snippets are not the top of the Google search now. Google now often shows:
- AI Overviews
- Knowledge Panels
- People Also Ask
- Local Packs
- Video results
And, most importantly, in many searches, AI Overviews appear above traditional featured snippets.
Why featured snippets still matter
1. They feed AI Overviews
Google frequently pulls information from pages that already rank well and are structured similarly to featured snippets. Sites that win featured snippets often become sources cited in AI-generated answers.
2. They increase visibility
Even if click-through rates have declined, a featured snippet still gives:
- More screen real estate
- Strong brand visibility
- Higher authority perception
- Greater likelihood of being referenced elsewhere
3. They help voice search
Many voice assistants still rely on featured snippet-style answers for quick responses.
4. They dominate informational searches
For queries like:
- “What is legal malpractice?”
- “How long does probate take in Illinois?”
- “Can an LLC own real estate?”
Google still frequently displays snippet-style answers. Therefore, featured snippets are still important for SEO, but in 2026 they should be viewed as part of a broader AI visibility strategy, not as the ultimate ranking goal. For many industries, especially legal, winning featured snippets also increases your chances of being cited in Google’s AI Overviews, which is becoming the more important visibility opportunity.
How Can I Make Sure Google Includes My Website in Featured Snippets?
According to Google, you can’t. There is no way to “tell” Google directly that your law firm website must be included in featured snippets for any given search term. Think about it: If that were possible, every law firm would do it, and the “featured” function would become pointless. What you can do, however, is craft a content marketing strategy that is optimized to show Google relevance for the searches Google users who have a high likelihood of seeking legal services like yours are running, and set up the technical SEO (search engine optimization) features on the pages that host that content to make it easy for Google to access, “read,” and index the materials posted by your law firm when the content you have made available is a relevant response to a user’s query.
Where Do Featured Snippets Fit in a Law Firm Digital Marketing Plan?
As you may have gathered from the above, integrating featured snippets into a law firm digital marketing strategy requires (at least) a two-pronged approach: content creation (optimizing the materials your law firm website actually posts to its website) and website maintenance (the technical optimizations that make your content accessible to Google’s crawlers and provide digital markers of quality). Most law firms will need local SEO as well (local emphasis may be less important for firms in practice areas, like IP law, that are primarily federal), but often local relevance can be woven in through content marketing and technical SEO.
Technical SEO for Featured Snippets
From a technical standpoint, a law firm website can give its hosted content the best chance by using some essential tools to help Google figure out what each page is saying, and why readers should trust that information. Remember: Google wants to deliver relevant results to search engine users. Google also clearly wants to sell sponsored search results, sure, but now that there are increasingly viable alternatives to searching Google directly (e.g., ChatGPT Search, Perplexity), Google stands to lose both eyeballs and advertising revenue if users get frustrated and begin to look elsewhere for the answers to their pressing questions. What this underlying financial incentive on Google’s part means for you as you grow your law firm is that your technical SEO strategy can work with Google’s parameters, rather than needing to somehow “trick” them into showing users your content.
Featured Snippets Content Strategy
If your goal is to get into the coveted “featured snippets” window, you will need to tailor your content carefully to go beyond performing well in search engine results pages (SERPs) and present Google with readily extractable excerpts. Run a few Google searches and pay attention to the featured snippets you see in your own results; you will probably begin to notice that the overwhelming majority of the snippets featured are presented as succinct answers, either to your query or to a closely-related question. This is the kind of structure Google specifically will be looking for, so providing a clear answer, in one or two sentences, to a question your content might logically answer gives you a good place to start as you are thinking about ways to optimize your content strategy to enhance your law firm’s chances of appearing in Google’s featured snippets.
Integrating Content and Technical SEO for Featured Snippets: Structured Data
To maximize your law firm’s chances of appearing in Google’s featured snippets, you will want to make sure your website’s technical optimizations and written content are working hand-in-hand. There are several factors that can play a role in effectively integrating these two sides of your SEO strategy coin, but one piece of the puzzle that in most cases can be implemented fairly quickly and intuitively is structured data.
What Is Structured Data and How Does It Work?
Moz, an expansive organization that provides tools and services to digital marketing professionals, explains that the main purpose of structured data (markup) is to provide context to help search engines interpret the content on your website’s pages. Often a specific markup tells search engines what kind of document they should be expecting to see on the page, for example by clearly labeling sections for FAQs or how-tos (for search engines, not for website visitors; the visitor-facing indicators should “matched” the schema, but schema markup will not be part of the website visible to human visitors).
Planning Structured Data for Featured Snippets
Most structured data markup relies on the schema.org system. Many, but not all, of the classifications in that system have been incorporated by Google Search Central, so for any pages you particularly want to see in Google’s featured snippets, you will want to talk to your webmaster about tailoring your optimizations to Google specifically. A good point for starting that discussion may be to address how you can make sure your law firm content pages meet the criteria for indexing and readability Google uses to determine whether a page qualifies for enriched search results, even though most law firm content will not fall into one of the categories (job postings, recipes, and events) that Google currently considers eligible for inclusion in “enriched” results displays.
Leading With Content: Make It Snappy!
Every now and then, the digital marketing “powers that be” give us a little bit of a break, and a single technique works to improve performance toward more than one goal. Leading with a short-answer paragraph that directly answers the query your page content is targeting is one of those lucky optimizations.
If your digital marketing agency has been emphasizing this format in order to enhance the frequency of your law firm website’s appearance in the citations provided by many answer engines, then you get to enjoy some good news here in that Google also looks for short, accurate-yet-concise answers to user queries to include in featured snippets. You can get even more out of this technique by targeting long-tail keywords that use natural language to pose a query as an interrogative sentence, e.g., “Who gets the children in a Texas divorce?” or “Can I divide homestead property between my kids?”
Keep Your Eye on the Prize
Trying to show up in all the places where someone looking for legal services in your practice area might be looking can sometimes feel like an impossible task. The many layers of optimizations and the sheer number of pieces to the puzzle can quickly become overwhelming, especially to busy attorneys trying to grow their practice. Try to remember that the goal is not to appear everywhere, all of the time; instead, you want to appear consistently, and feature prominently in the results for searches that correspond clearly to your practice niche. Showing up in the right place, at the right time, in front of the right people, gains you many more contacts than simply showing up everywhere you possibly can. Work with an experienced law firm marketing professional or agency to develop a cohesive law firm marketing strategy that prioritizes local and high-intent searches, and then focus on making sure that your law firm website is optimized to provide the kinds of clear, helpful answers that people in your immediate area are likely to appreciate. Update your website regularly with both fresh content and SEO reviews to verify your pages are featured-snippets-ready, and keep your law firm phone lines staffed to handle the calls!
