Milbank has once again decided its incoming associates shouldn’t have to wait around to get to work, offering the new class the option to start three weeks ahead of schedule, August 24, rather than the September 14 date on the calendar. It’s a nice gesture for those who want to get a head start on paying off their student loans, but, more importantly, it’s also a tell.
The memo, sent to incoming associates on Tuesday (available in full below), opens by explaining that “the Firm continues to experience exceptionally strong client demand.” There it is, in writing.
You don’t invite an entire incoming class to show up early unless there’s something for them to do once they arrive. And Milbank, more than most, has spent this year signaling that there is plenty. This is the firm that kicked off the 2026 salary wars with across-the-board raises of $10,000 to $20,000, then — not content to let the new scale do the talking — turned around and handed out special summer bonuses of up to $25,000. A firm that keeps finding fresh ways to route money toward its associates is a firm with money to route. And, apparently, more work than its current roster can absorb.
The memo also address the benefits, aside from the financial ones, to an August arrival. It offers “early experience on active matters” and a “more gradual introduction to the Firm” before the broader first-year class shows up in September. And, you know, the firm gets some more billable hours out of the deal too.
Give Milbank credit, though — the optional actually reads as optional. Interested associates have until 10 a.m. on August 10 to raise their hands, and anyone who stays quiet is welcomed on September 14 as planned. Global orientation runs September 14 through 16 regardless of when you start, and associates in the rotation program are assured their choice won’t affect their placements. No penalty for opting out, no velvet glove with an iron fist tucked inside. Start early if you’re the type-A with no summer plans left. Enjoy the last of your freedom if you’re not.
But make no mistake about what the offer signals. When a firm this eager to open its wallet is also this eager to get bodies in seats three weeks ahead of schedule business is good.
