One Of America’s Greatest Judges Ditched An Even More Unique First Name

Ed. Note: Welcome to our daily feature Trivia Question of the Day!

“Learned Hand” is one of the most memorable names in American law — a brilliant federal appeals judge, the most-quoted jurist never to sit on the Supreme Court, owner of a moniker that sounds almost too good to be real. But “Learned” wasn’t his first name at all; it was his middle name, taken from his mother’s side of the family. What was the given first name he was born with — and later dropped?

Hint: As Professor Orin Kerr is fond of noting, Hand’s given first name is exceedingly appropriate for a lawyer.
