Weil’s Successor Walked Away, And Now The Firm Has A ‘Run On The Bank’ Problem

Ed. note: Welcome to our daily feature, Quote of the Day.

The very fact that she declined to step up would signal to any partner with their head screwed on that she has lost faith. And what I’m afraid is going to happen is the run on the bank psychology, which all too often we have seen means the end for law firms.

— Bruce MacEwen, a law firm consultant at Adam Smith, Esq., warning Bloomberg Law that Ramona Nee’s decision to turn down the executive-partner role could further unsettle Weil Gotshal’s partnership. Nee was slated to succeed Barry Wolf in January, but her withdrawal leaves the firm without a clear successor as it faces mounting partner departures and failed merger talks. Wolf had described a smooth handoff as his priority, saying in May, “Nothing would make me happier or prouder than her leading this firm to even greater heights.”
